Everything you should know before joining Gano Excel

Gano Excel is a Malaysian beverage and wellness products company that’s been in business for more than twenty years, with a U.S. presence for more than 10.

Carrying out its commitment to health and wealth through direct sales of beverage and wellness products derived from key ingredient in traditional Asian medicines, Gano Excel is a multinational company with a relatively low financial entry point. The company was founded by Leow Soon Seng in 1995. It’s been operating in the U.S. since 2002.

Signup cost: Kit prices begin at $50
Global revenue: $150M in 2013 ( 1)
The Good: Company appears to have genuine commitment to its product and its sellers’ success, making itself readily accessible for questions and guidance.
The Bad: The fine print on the product pages indicates that some products include chemicals known to the state of California to cause birth defects – pretty concerning for a company that says it’s dedicated to health and wellness!

Products

Gano Excel offers a highly focused line of beverages that concentrates on coffee, tea, and cocoa blends with Ganoderma Lucidum (also called Red Mushroom) as the cornerstone ingredient. Gano Excel also offers wellness products that include soap, toothpaste, and herbal supplements, also featuring Ganoderma Lucidum as the key ingredient:

  • Gano Cafe: Tongkat Ali Coffee (a blend of coffee, sweetener, and non-dairy creamer); Mocha Chocolate (coffee and chocolate blend); Gano Cafe 3-in-1; Coffee; Hazelnut Coffee; Gano Schokolade (hot cocoa); Classic; Red Rooibos Tea; Gano C’Real Spirulina (grains, protein, Red Mushroom, and nutrients in a breakfast cereal or light snack).
  • Gano Daily: Gano Soap (made of goat’s milk); Gano Toothpaste; Cordyceps supplement (combats stress and aging); Garcinia supplement (supports weight control); Sakanno supplement (enhances libido); Excellium supplement (supports brain function); Ganoderma supplement (overall health and well-being).

Opportunity

Gano Excel’s MLM model involves direct selling through Independent Business Owners (IBO). The company places an emphasis on the target, specialty markets of coffee and wellness, plus the ubiquity of social media for word of mouth promotion among their independent sellers’ contacts.

Folks who want to sell Gano Excel products can register to be an IBO online, by mail or via phone. Once they’re brought on-board, sellers have access to a virtual back office and an e-commerce website for their customers’ orders. IBOs can also place orders and ship online.

Enrollment is offered at various levels – as little as $50 for SmartStart (3 boxes of coffee, tea or cocoa) or $100 for SmartStart Plus (6 boxes plus marketing materials). Depending on your level of commitment, kit prices increase (as do the products available in the kit) to a max of $995. IBOs purchase products at wholesale prices and keep the difference between the wholesale and the retail prices they sell product for. As IBOs sell more, they can earn the ability to purchase product at a lower rate (increasing their commission); they can also earn payouts and bonuses based on team and downline sales.

For example, let’s say you enroll with Gano Excel and buy a First Level ESP-1 kit. You get 12 boxes of product, plus marketing materials. You basically buy, let’s say, a box of Gano 3-in-1 at $17 and sell it for $25. You earn 20% commission, plus a 50% increase on your binary payout for 2 months. Payouts are made weekly; rewards points can be earned. Potential benefits as you increase sales can include free products, trips, and increased commissions. One key element of being a direct seller through Gano Excel is that affiliates must adhere to the company’s compliance guidelines (“gain, use, share”).

There is detailed information about the compensation plan and team structure available on the company’s website, although some of it is a little vague. On the other hand, everything about the site appears to emphasize supporting the work of IBOs and encouraging IBOs to ask questions when they need help, so it seems like it should be pretty easy to get more information.

IBO training includes weekly meetings and calls, and Saturday/regional/national events. Sellers also have access to a brochure that includes important numbers. There are several online documents and presentations available for sellers to rely on, from motivation skills, to how to throw a coffee party, to how to build your own network of sellers. IBOs can enroll in an autoship option so that they always have product available. The full policies and procedures manual is available online. There is no annual renewal fee to be a Gano Excel seller.

Gano Excel is a multinational company based in Malaysia. It’s still the company’s home base. Sellers operate in 70 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Central America (Panama, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Peru, Mexico, and more), Asia, Australia, and Europe. Some products are available only in some countries.

The Good

Gano Excel owns and operates its own Ganoderma Lucidum plantations. It also oversees the production of its proprietary product line. This allows the company tight control over research and development, product quality, and packaging. Gano Excel also values principles that are important to many consumers, like environmental responsibility – think reduced packaging, for example.

The Bad

Basing a full product line on a single, key ingredient seems risky. What happens if there’s a problem with the Ganoderma Lucidum crop one season? This could have a significant and adverse affect on product availability, and by extension, sellers’ ability to obtain and sell product.

Also, and perhaps not as important, some folks will not be able to get over the fact that Ganoderma Lucidum is a mushroom – no matter how much you might not be able to tell it’s in a product.

And finally, while all products carry the FDA-mandated label that manufacturers cannot make medical claims about what these products can do for you, two items in particular carry a more serious warning; Gano Cafe 3-in-1 and Sakanno supplements have labels that indicate these products include ingredients known to cause birth defects, like lead.

Recap

Gano Excel relies on a network of direct sellers to get its beverage and wellness products into the hands of consumers. This is an established company based in Malaysia, and it operates in dozens of countries around the world. Ganoderma Lucidum, also known as Red Mushroom and a core element of traditional Asian healthcare practices, is a key ingredient of Gano Excel’s Gano Cafe and Gano Daily product lines. Products include coffee, tea, and cocoa blends, as well as soap, toothpaste, and wellness supplements.

Independent sellers who sign on with Gano Excel earn commission on products they sell; they can also earn bonuses based on their own sales volume and that of their downline and team. The advantages of selling through an established, stable company with a proven record of long-term expansion and tight controls on the supply of key ingredients are somewhat muted by affiliating with one that relies so heavily on a single, key ingredient, and one where two products carry ingredient warning labels.
